I’ve been endlessly consuming pandemic and election related content for so long I forgot pleasant media existed. As I prepare to return to the world of music and freshen up those playlists, I’m realizing that there have been some mega drops, from teaser singles to entire albums. Here are some releases you may have missed in the midst of the chaos, as well as my first impressions. Heads up, get ready for some female recognition, because the girls have been thriving.

Therefore I Am by Billie Eillish

Starting off strong, Billie released Therefore I Am last week and it’s already dominating the internet. This single is a sprinkle of philosophy and a big dose of shade. It’s an entertaining display of her range, with lyricism being the true star. The vibe arms listeners with a comeback confidence. Lines such as, “What the hell are you talking about, get my pretty name out of your mouth,” have already gone viral on platforms such as TikTok.

I’d Like 2 Go Home Now by Meg Myers

A little less well-known, Meg Myers is a singer-songwriter who received a lot of attention for her cover of Kate Bush’s legendary Running Up That Hill. This November, Myers released an EP titled I’d Like 2 Go Home Now and it’s a lively and colorful drop. A pop-infused lineup with clear vocal influences from female pioneers., Iif you’re into throaty vocals accompanied by dance beats, this one’s for you. My suggestion is End of the World, which practically revives romance in these weird times.

Positions by Ariana Grande

Miss Grande! A whole album? Ariana is absolutely feeling herself in this huge release, as she should. She’s undoubtedly had a painful couple of years, from the tragic loss of Mac to the devastating Manchester shooting. Positions is all about healing, sexual positivity and pure confidence. Tracks like positions and pov are getting a lot of love, but I’m begging for someone to vibe to ‘90s R&B anthem my hair with me.

OHFR? by Rico Nasty

Rico Nasty’s November release has me feeling aggressive in the best type of way. The full album is yet to release, but Rico has blessed us with some teasers. So far, you can stream three tracks, including banger OHFR?, a single that features RN’s trademark scratchy voice and immaculate attitude. “You mad that at you can’t hurt my pockets or my feelings,” is a testament to Rico’s undeniable success in the rap industry, where this drop will surely not be an exception.

Iris cover by Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers

Saving my favorite for last, this Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers collab will be occupying my brain for the entire holiday season. Their cover of Iris, originally recorded by the Goo Goo Dolls, is so blissful. It feels like Christmas came early, and my gift is wrapped in the delicate harmonies of two literal angels. Unfortunately, this was a limited release on Bandcamp where all proceeds went to Fair Fight Action, but someone pulled through and put it on YouTube. (Donate if you can!)

Some honorable mentions include new releases from 2 Chainz, Foo Fighters, Lil Nas X and 100 gec’s unexpected collab with 3OH!3. There’s almost too much, you guys. Happy streaming, thankful for this showering of good tunes after a little music drought.
